Huskies Sweep Shippensburg in Softball

SHIPPENSBURG--The Bloomsburg University softball team took a pair of games from Shippensburg on Wednesday by scores of 3-2 and 6-4.

In game one, the Huskies and Lady Raiders were tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh when with one out Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport) singled. After moving to second on a sacrifice, Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) popped up a ball in foul territory between the catcher and the first baseman. The ball, however, was not fielded by anyone from Shippensburg giving new life to Mauro, who then promptly doubled home Reed with the go-ahead run. Shippensburg did get a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh, but Ashley Lynn (Riverside/Danville) worked out of the jam to earn the win.

Shippensburg took an early 1-0 lead with a single run in the second inning before the Huskies went in front with a pair of runs in the sixth. Jenna Hampton (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) had the big hit in the inning, a two-run double that scored Mandy Koch (Dauphin/Central Dauphin) and Mauro on the play. Shippensburg tied the score in the bottom of the sixth setting up the dramatic ending.

In the nightcap, Nikki Shiko went 3-3 and scored a run, while Kayleen Sidisky (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) went 1-3 and hit a two-run homer to lead Bloomsburg to the win.

Leading 1-0 in the top of the second, Bloomsburg scored four times in the inning to take a 5-0 lead. Sidisky had the big blow in the inning, a two-run homer, with two other runs scoring on a Shippensburg error. After Shippensburg cut into the lead with three runs in the fourth before the Huskies made it 6-3 when Jen Miller (Muir/Williams Valley) singled home Shikko who had doubled.

Sheelin Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) picked up the win, while Lynn earned the save with three and a third innings of relief.

Bloomsburg improves to 25-2, 4-0 in the PSAC East, and host Kutztown on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
